I've always been baffled by why I often dislike photos of myself, even when others seem to love them. It turns out there's a fascinating reason behind this: our brain's perception of facial symmetry.

Our faces aren't perfectly symmetrical, and the image we see in the mirror is a reversed version of our true appearance. This slight difference can lead to a disconnect between how we perceive ourselves and how others see us.

I recently experimented with this firsthand by flipping a photo of myself. The result was surprising! The flipped image looked far more familiar and appealing, highlighting the impact of facial symmetry on our self-perception. Taken three years ago, it remains my profile picture for all my business pages.

While I may not be particularly fond of it (I generally dislike photos of myself), I use it because it offers a real representation of who I am, free from any editing. I am not wearing makeup, and all my natural features, including my frown lines, are visible. I was astonished by the difference in my appearance in the flipped version. What I see in the mirror and the image others perceive are vastly different.

Next time you're feeling self-conscious about a photo, remember this: what you see in the mirror isn't always the full picture. Instead of commenting on how you dislike yourself in photos, try looking at it in a mirror so you can see yourself as others do. A beautiful individual.

Sadly, the work the volunteers at @heartfelt_ausnz do does not stop over the Christmas break.  So many parents will never get to take their babies home, and it breaks my heart. 

Every time I do a heartfelt session, I write the baby's name on a piece of paper and fold a tiny paper crane.  I have done this more often than I want to admit because it brings a tear to my eye.

One of the many reasons we love living up here is the variety of wildlife.

This little spiky friend, Sophie, is a regular visitor to our garden. 🦔 Did you know her hind feet face backward to help her burrow quickly?

Unfortunately, Sophie's peaceful visit was interrupted by our ratbag puppy. 🐶 After a little too much excitement, puppy time-out is now in effect!
